Business Intelligence Report Design

Problem Statement: The existing promotion reporting business intelligence reporting experience was going to be deprecated within the Commercial Insights program space at 84.51˚. Because of this deprecation there was an opportunity to understand what a better overall promotion reporting experience could potentially be for our users.

Project Goal: Understand the opportunity space for promotion reporting for Consumer Package Goods (CPGs) Companies and then design a new Power BI reporting experience to deliver the most value to users.

My Role: I was the Lead User Experience Designer for this project. I partnered with my Product Owner in the Promotion Reporting space to plan out the research to define the opportunity space and create a user journey map of the promotion process. After defining the opportunity space I designed wireframes and a prototype of what a future promotion reporting experience would be. This was then validated with users to ensure it would be valuable.

Discovery Research

I kicked off this project by partnering with the Product Owner in the Promotion Reporting space within the Commercial Insights Product. I worked directly with her to create the research brief for the discovery research. I guided her to choosing to define a User Journey Map for the Promotion Process from a CPG analyst and Kroger Category Manager perspective. After writing the script and partnering with our sales team to find the right clients, I facilitated research sessions with 4 external users and 9 internal users.

MVP Experience

After understanding the opportunity space for improving the Promotion Reporting space I designed this first round of an MVP reporting experience that would replace the old promotion reporting experience. There would be 2 reports - one focused on promotion summary and the second around promotion performance.

Iterative Design

I took the first iteration of the promotion report and got feedback from our external users to understand how much value this would provide. We got some valuable feedback on what would provide value but more importantly what was missing. This next phase saw the scope of the report grow to include multiple tabs within a single report that provides much more granular insights around promotions.

Future Experience Iteration

While the focus of the initial project was around redesigning a new promotion reporting experience I also took the liberty of rethinking what an ideal end promotion reporting experience could be. This was exploring a custom built experience that focuses on the priorities of the user and gives them a base understanding of how their promotions are performing and calling out the key areas they need to focus on.
